Skier seriously injured at Gunstock

GILFORD — A skier was flown to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with serious injuries after hitting some trees Sunday morning at the Gunstock Mountain Resort ski area in Gilford.

Gilford Fire Lt. Jeff Madon said his department received a 911 call shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday, reporting that a skier hit a small grove of trees. Madon said members of the Gunstock ski patrol were first to reach the injured skier, a man, and freed him from the grove of trees. Madon said a Gilford ambulance was dispatched to the scene, and crews determined the man suffered potentially life-threatening head injuries.

“He was wearing a ski helmet, which suffered significant damage,” said Madon. “The man was conscious throughout the rescue.”

Based on the injuries, Madon called for a DHART helicopter. The man, who Madon would not identify, was carried to the Gilford ambulance, which transported him to the landing zone near the entrance to Gunstock, along Route 11A.

He was flown to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for treatment of his injuries. Madon did not have an update on the man’s condition Sunday night.
