Prison for Canaan man in drunken driving crash

A Canaan man was sentenced Monday to 1 1/2- to 3 years in state prison after a Grafton County Superior Court jury found him guilty of aggravated driving while intoxicated.

Russell Christian, 41, of Canaan, also received a 1 1/2- to 5-year prison sentence which was suspended for 10 years.

The charges stem from a Dec. 13, 2012, collision on Route 118 in Canaan in which Christian’s Dodge truck rolled over and landed on an embankment. The collision sent his passenger, Steven Cotting, 34, through the windshield. Cotting landed about 20 feet away in the woods.

Both Christian and Cotting suffered serious injuries.

Police said alcohol and speed were factors in the collision.
