Keene man hurt after near head-on collision

WINCHESTER — A Keene man was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on Route 10 Monday afternoon.

Joseph Rice, 23, was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for treatment.

Winchester police, firefighters and ambulance workers responded to the scene on Route 10/Keene Road about one-half mile south of Coombs Bridge Road at 4:13 p.m.

A driver in the crash, Jeffrey Caster, 51, of Marlborough told police he was headed north on Keene Road/Route 10 in a 2013 Ford E350 box truck when he saw a southbound 1998 Jeep Cherokee coming directly toward him in the north bound lane.

Rice was the driver of the Jeep, police said in a press release.

Castor took evasive action by pulling into the breakdown lane, but was unable to avoid the Jeep from striking the driver side of the box truck, police said. The box truck continued into the breakdown land and flipped over onto the passenger side a short distance off of the roadway.

Then a northbound 2000 Volkswagen Beetle, driven by Tarin Nichols, 20, of Hinsdale, traveling behind the box collided with the Jeep.

Police said Nichols saw the box truck and swerved to the center of the road to avoid striking the box truck and was struck on the passenger side with what appeared to be the rear of the Jeep after it struck the box truck, police said.Rice suffered serious injuries and had to pulled from the Jeep, after which he was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
The other drivers were checked by ambulance personnel at the scene and released.

Winchester was assisted at the scene by Swanzey firefighters, Keene and Diluzio ambulance services, state police, and the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Department.
