College Sports Roundup: Daniels' two goals lift St. A

Johnny Daniels scored twice, once on the power play, as St. Anselm doubled up Southern Maine, 4-2, in men’s hockey action Friday night.

Daniels added an assist for the Hawks, who got goals from Bryan Sullivan and Eric Czapka. Sullivan had an assist, and Joe Tebano notched two helpers.

Dartmouth 3, St. Lawrence 1: At Canton, N.Y., goals from Brandon McNally, Grant Opperman and Charlie Mosey provided the offensive outburst Friday needed to win, but the star was goalie Charles Grant. The netminder finished the night with 32 saves. Dartmouth is 5-16-3 and 4-12-1 in the ECAC.

St. Lawrence, one of the nation’s hottest teams coming into the game, dropped to 11-15-3 overall and 5-9-3 in ECAC Hockey action.

Women’s hockey

St. Lawrence 4, Dartmouth 1: Freshman Devon Moir opened the scoring and gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead 15:23 into the first period. After that it was all Saints. With the loss, the Big Green (7-17-1, 6-12-1) have now dropped two home conference games in a row, while the Saints (11-16-3, 10-6-3) avenged a 7-2 defeat Dartmouth in the Upper Valley last season.

Linsday Holdcroft made 17 saves in a losing effort for Dartmouth.

Men’s basketball

Cornell 70, Dartmouth 67: At Ithaca, N.Y., The Big Red victory ended a 25-game losing streak against Division I competition dating to last year as Cornell improved to 2-19 on the season and 1-6 in the Ivy league. Nolan Cressler led four Big Red players in double figures with 17 points while Dwight Tarwater registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Alex Mitola led the furious rally with three 3-pointers and a pair of free throws for 11 of the 16 points during the run. But it was senior Tyler Melville who led Dartmouth (9-12, 2-5 Ivy) with 14 points in the game, and junior John Golden matched a career-high with 11 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

Cornell 78, Dartmouth 59: At Hanover, tied at 48-all with 13:02 remaining, Cornell used a 30-11 run to clip Dartmouth.

Dartmouth finished with three players in double figures, led by sophomore Lakin Roland with 17 points on 8-of-12 from the floor, but fouled out in 18 minutes. Freshman Fanni Szabo added 14 points with two from the outside and junior Abbey Schmitt contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.
