MANCHESTER — Registration is open for spring classes at Nackey S. Loeb School of Communications for anyone interested in writing, travel, photography, cartooning and public relations.
The session from March 19 to April 23 includes six weeks of classes in Multimedia; Cartooning and Illustrations; Photoshop; Public Relations; and a new class, Travel Writing. All classes except Photoshop are free of charge.
If you like to travel, like to write and possibly make some money writing about travel, the new Travel Writing class is for you. Husband/wife team Stacy Milbouer and Tom Long will cover some basics of travel writing, including pitches, ethics and publication. The two have written travel articles for many publications, including Yankee Magazine; they are regular contributors to New Hampshire Magazine. Class time is 5:30 to 7 p.m.
In Multimedia, Nashua Telegraph Photo Editor Don Himsel teaches how to combine photos and sound to develop multi-media packages that offer a more colorful way of reporting. Students need a laptop, digital camera, cable or memory card to upload photos to a computer, digital recorder and cable to upload sound. Class time is 5:30 to 7 p.m.
In Cartooning and Illustrations, graphic designer and illustrator Ron Plante helps students explore their creativity and visual conceptualization skills. Focusing on political and social commentary, students will create illustrations, beginning with sketches and developing an idea through to final artwork. This class is open to students 16 and older. Class time is 7 to 8:30 p.m.
In Photoshop Elements 6: Beyond the Basics, instructor Debi Rapson builds on students’ knowledge of basic Photoshop techniques to cover keyboard shortcuts and more advanced functions. Class time is 5:30 to 7 p.m. The fee is $50; for those 18 and under, it is $25.
The Public Relations class covers the history and ethics of PR, how to write effectively, PR tactics, media relations, crisis communications and PR in new media. It is popular among representatives from non-profits and civic organizations and is taught by respected public relations professionals Jayme Simoes and Brett St. Clair of Louis Karno & Company Communications. Class time is 7 to 8:30 p.m.
