NHIAA Basketball: Bedford girls win showdown

DERRY — The Bedford girls’ basketball team found its touch at the free throw line just in time to post a 49-48 win over Pinkerton Academy and stay undefeated in Division I.

The Bulldogs (16-0) clinched the top seed in the upcoming postseason tournament. Pinkerton fell to fourth (12-4), tied with Bishop Guertin of Nashua.

Bedford shot 3 of 12 from the foul line right up to final 29 seconds of the game.

That’s when Ali Glennon, Bri Purcell and Rachel Collins made five straight free throws to put Bedford up four in the final seconds. Pinkerton’s Valerie Martin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

“Today was not our best game, but this means more to me,” said Bedford coach Sue Thomas. “It shows we can fight through adversity and get the job done.”

Gabby Hunter and Collins scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Bedford. Purcell added nine. Kayla Stacy’s 12 points led Pinkerton, and Brandi Bonneau and Martin each chipped in nine.
