Monarchs catch Portland

Zach O'Brien's seventh goal of the season capped a three-goal comeback and gave the Manchester Monarchs a 5-4 win over the Portland Pirates Saturday night at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.

The Monarchs now lead the VIP Cup series with Portland six games to two.

The Monarchs close out a three games in three days homestand Sunday afternoon when they host Worcester at 3 p.m.

Trailing 4-2 heading to the third period, Manchester scored twice to knot the game at 4-4.

Colin Fraser made it 4-3 halfway through the period and Jordan Weal scored a minute later to square this up.

The Monarchs, trying to bounce back from a 4-3 shootout loss at home to Springfield on Friday night, had all kinds of problems with Portland's power play.

The Pirates turned goals on three of their four power play opportunities through the first two periods into a 4-2 lead with 20 minutes to play.

Portland defenseman Daine Todd opened the scoring 6:58 into the game with an even strength goal. Less than a minute and a half later, Lucas Lessio doubled the lead to 2-0 with the first Pirate power play score.
Twice in the second period, the Monarchs cut the lead to a goal and twice the Pirates answered with a Brandon McMillan power play tally.

Nick Deslauriers made it 2-1 with his 18th goal at the 3:20 mark of the period.

McMillan got that one back at 8:05 for 3-1.

Manchester's Weal scored his 14th just 17 seconds later for 3-2.

McMillan pushed the lead back to two goals with his next score at 10:19.
