Mass. man, teen injured in Haverhill snowmobile crash

HAVERHILL — A Massachusetts man and his teenaged passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries Saturday when the snowmobile he was operating struck a tree.According to New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officer Lt. James Kneeland, Ryan Murphy, 27, of Mattapoisett, Mass., was operating a 2012 Polaris IQ LXT 600 snowmobile with a 15-year-old passenger at a residence in the Mountain Lakes Recreational Development in Haverhill, when the snow machine hit an embankment at 1:45 p.m.

After hitting the embankment, Murphy told Fish and game officers he attempted to make a turn on a gravel driveway, was unable turn and hit another snow embankment on the opposite side of the driveway. Murphy then lost control of the snowmobile and struck a small tree.
The right front ski of the snowmobile straddled a small tree and the front end of the machine struck the tree, ejecting both Murphy and his passenger. Kneeland said neither party was wearing a helmet or eye protection.
Murphy and the teenaged passenger were taken to Cottage Hospital in Woodsville for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation, though early indications are that unreasonable speed, operator inattention and inexperience were contributing factors in the collision.
