Man arrested after Manchester police find him in area of recent thefts

James Brietzke

MANCHESTER — A Massachusetts man is under arrest for possessing burglary tools after a patrol officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle near FairPoint Communications, where there were two reported thefts of cable over the past two weeks.

Officers pulled over a white Ford Ranger being operated Saturday night by James Brietzke, 34, of 435 Swains Pond Ave., Melrose, Mass., on Brown Avenue, at Pine Island Plaza.

Police said Brietzke earlier had dropped off a friend on Winthrop Street, a dead-end street adjacent to FairPoint, and then left. Over the past two weeks, the telephone company had reported two thefts of thousands of dollars worth of cable. In both instances, the burglars cut a chain-link fence to get access to the cable and steal it.

The vehicle involved in the thefts was recorded on video surveillance and matched the "exact" description of Brietzke's Ford Ranger, according to police.

Brietzke, who identified himself and told officers his driver's license was suspended, said he dropped off a friend near Greenleaf Street because of an alleged prearranged date for his friend with a woman he met online. Officers were unable to validate his claim.

He identified his friend but did not provide further information as to where he went after he dropped him off. Police observed several tools in Brietzke's pickup truck along with two backpacks, which police believed was suspicious given the area and time of night.

Brietzke consented to a search of the Ford Ranger and police said they located numerous bolt cutters, masks, gloves and multiple changes of clothes. Brietzke was taken into custody and booked on charges of possession of burglary tools and driving after suspension/revocation.

Police said a check of Brietzke's criminal history revealed arrests involving burglaries.

Officers searched the area for the other man but were unable to find him. Detectives are following up on the case.

Four people were arrested early Saturday morning at an underage party at 150 Dow St.

Numerous party-goers fled when police arrived about 3 a.m., but officers ended up catching four of them.

Police said none of those arrested had permission to be on the premises, so each is charged with criminal trespass.

Arrested were Olivia Fitzwater-Duran, 20, of 302 Auburn St.; Kendall Lennartson, 19, of 312 Spruce St.; Shanice Martin, 18, of 395 Bartlett St., and Jonah Sanborn, 19, of 27 Leo St.

Fitzwater-Duran also was charged with possession of a controlled drug after police allegedly found a small amount of heroin on her while she was being booked.

Daniel Adams, 30, no fixed address, was arrested Friday after police said he swallowed a bag of heroin after being found holding an uncapped needle in the bathroom at the Helping Hands Day Center, 140 Central St., a daytime shelter for the homeless.

Officer Rick Brown was conducting a business check at the center when he was told someone was "shooting up" in the bathroom.

He entered the bathroom and saw Daniel Adams, 30, no fixed address, allegedly inside one of the stalls with an uncapped needle in his hand. Police said Adams told the officer he "needed a fix" because he missed his scheduled appointment earlier that day at the methadone clinic.

Because the officer approached him, police said Adams did not have a chance to "cook" his heroin and inject it, so instead he swallowed the bag of heroin.

He was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled drug (heroin) and falsifying physical evidence.
