NASHUA — The owner of Pawfectly Raw New England is hoping to expand her Amherst company by opening a new dog day care in Nashua.
“This is a new venture for me. It is very exciting,” said Tracy LaCombe, who will present her proposal to the Nashua Zoning Board of Adjustment tonight.
LaCombe breeds and shows Dogue de Bordeaux’s, more commonly known as French Mastiffs. She also founded Pawfectly Raw New England about four years ago, which offers raw dog food such as beef, chicken, fish and more.
After working with many dogs, LaCombe says she has found a demand for quality dog day care and boarding services in southern New Hampshire.
“This is a growing business, and I think Nashua is a good location for it,” she said.
LaCombe hopes to open The Pawfect K9 at 18 Airport Road in Nashua, which is being leased by Law Realty Company Inc. In addition to dog day care and boarding, she will also offer training and grooming at the facility.
“There will be a little bit of retail as well, as I plan to sell small treats and the food that I make,” she said. “Eventually, I would like to put in a small pool for dog therapy sessions.”
According to the city’s land use code, animal pet services are not permitted in the proposed airport industrial zone, meaning LaCombe will be seeking a use variance at tonight’s meeting.
About 10,000 square feet of the property will be used for the dog day care facility, which will include indoor and outdoor play areas for the dogs. Inside the building, there will be boarding kennels, exercise areas, time-out pens and grooming pods, according to a staff memo from Carter Falk, deputy planning manager.
“The applicant states that the dogs will be supervised at all times, both inside and outside the facility. Dogs will remain leashed while entering and exiting the building, and will not be off leash on the premises except in the exterior stockade fenced play area,” says Falk’s memo. “The applicant states this is the perfect area for this type of business.”
The property is at the end of Airport Road on the eastern side of the street. If approved, the business will have about five employees, and will be open 24 hours a day when boarding pets.
LaCombe anticipates between 30 to 50 visits daily by customers, clients, vendors and solicitors, according to her application.
“If all goes well, we should be opening on April 1,” she said.
Tonight’s zoning board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Nashua City Hall.
