Monarchs lose in Norfolk

The Norfolk Admirals defeated the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 Friday night.

The Monarchs (36-15-8) and Admirals (30-17-8) will play again tonight at 7:15.

Trailing 3-1 late in the game, Manchester's Nick Shore scored a shorthanded goal at 17:29. Brian O'Neill set up the score for Shore, who beat Viktor Fasth from the front of the net.

But that was as close as the Monarchs would get as Norfolk was able to close out the win.

The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead at 9:58 of the second period. Off a faceoff just outside the Norfolk zone, Londonderry's Ian O'Connor won the draw back to Andrew Bodnarchuk, who fired a shot from the neutral zone that eluded Fasth.

Norfolk tied the game at 16:50 when Emerson Etem beat Monarchs goalie Mathias Niederberger with a backhand shot.

The Admirals cashed in on a five-on-three power play with 42 seconds remaining in the second. Etem set up Sami Vatanen in front for the go-ahead goal.

The remainder of the power play time spilled into the third period and Norfolk made it count again, scoring 58 seconds in to take a 3-1 lead.

Rickard Rakell scored the goal, striking from the right circle to beat Niederberger.

Following tonight's rematch, Manchester will return home for a four-game homestand that begins Friday against Adirondack.
