College Basketball: SNHU men advance; St. A women fall

The Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team defeated American International College 68-53 in a first round Northeast-10 playoff game at the Fieldhouse in Manchester Friday night.

The Penmen (16-10) will play at Southern Connecticut State University Sunday at 3 p.m.

Rodney Sanders led a balanced SNHU attack with 14 points. Aleksander Dobrovic added 13, Elijah Bonsignore had 12 and Chris Walters had 11 points and nine rebounds.

AIC (9-19) was led by Spencer Braithwaite with 13 points.

The Penmen led 16-10 through the first 13 minutes of the game, but AIC mounted a charge (on a 15-1 run) that placed the Yellow Jackets on top 25-17 just before the half.

SNHU fell behind by as much as 38-31 in the second half before taking command. A 10-2 run for the Penmen gave SNHU the lead back to stay and the hosts put the game away from there.

Women's basketball

Le Moyne 58, St. Anselm 53: In Syracuse, the Dolphins advanced past the Hawks in the first round of the Northeast-10 women's basketball tourney.

Kierra Moore scored 12 points for St. Anselm, which finished 15-12 overall.

St. Anselm led 50-46 with less than three minutes to play and didn't trail in the game until there was 1:10 left on the clock, on Kayla Stroman hit a 15-footer.

Alex Marple's 21 points led Le Moyne, which moved on to visit top-ranked Bentley on Sunday at 3 p.m.




Franklin Pierce 76, Southern Connecticut 66: Kara Charette scored 22 points to lead the Ravens in their first-round victory in Rindge. Jessica Hurd grabbed nine rebounds for FPU (16-11), which visits Adelphi in a quarterfinal on Sunday at 3 p.m.
