College Roundup: Southern New Hampshire captures NE-10 hockey title

The Southern New Hampshire hockey team claimed the Northeast-10 championship with a 4-1 win over St. Michael's at the Ice Den in Hooksett Saturday.

The win is the first NE-10 championship for the program. The Penmen were the No. 3 seed and finished the year 17-8-1. No. 4 St. Michael's closed the year at 7-17-3.

The game was close until the end when SNHU scored a pair of empty net goals in the final minute to put the game away. Brian Troy scored with 52 seconds to go and Dane Caracino made it 4-1 with 11 ticks remaining.

After a scoreless first period, SNHU struck first on a goal from Jim Gabrione at 2:47 of the second off assists from Jay Sylvia and Nick Riccio.

Sylvia scored at 4:53 to make it 2-0. Trevor Nelson and Riccio assisted. The Purple Knights cut the lead to 2-1 at 10:38 on a Keith Altidor tally, but could pull no closer. Penmen goalie Tyler Holske made 44 saves in the win.

Women's basketball

Maine 66, Univ. of New Hampshire 62: At Durham, senior guard Kelsey Hogan (Nashua) notched a game-high 21 points but UNH fell on Senior Day at Lundholm Gymnasium Saturday.

New Hampshire's eight-game winning streak against Maine was snapped, falling to 18-11 overall and 12-4 in America East. Maine upped its record to 16-13, 10-6.

Hogan was 8-16 from the field, including 3-7 from beyond the arc for the Wildcats. Junior guard Ariel Gaston logged 11 points. Sophomore guard Elizabeth Belanger registered 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Men's lacrosse

Dartmouth 14, Sacred Heart 10: At Dallas, the Big Green scored four unanswered goals to break a 10-10 tie and earn a win at SMU Stadium in the 2014 Patriot Cup.

Wiley Osborne had a hat trick for Dartmouth (1-3), while Mike Olentine and Don Stephan each added two goals apiece.




Rivier 17, Green Mountain 0: At Nashua, Rivier opened its season with a win. Leading the way offensively was senior attacker Danny Hooper with a team-high six goals and an assist. Hooper also added 10 groundballs. Sophomore Kyle Graham (Londonderry) had a team high 14 groundballs.

Women's lacrosse

Yale 12, Dartmouth 5: At Hanover, the Big Green women fell in the 2014 Ivy League opener for both teams.

For Dartmouth (2-1, 0-1 Ivy), the loss was the first of the season after wins at UNH and at home against UConn to begin the spring.

Offensively, junior Sarah Byrne scored three goals against the Bulldogs. Byrne leads the team this season with 13 markers goals.




Lehigh 9, University of New Hampshire 5: At Durham, Laura Puccia scored two goals but it was not enough for UNH at Bremner Field.

UNH fell to 1-2 at home and 1-3 overall. Lehigh improved to 2-1.
