UNH women draw UVM in basketball tournament
The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team begins its quest for its first America East tournament championship with a game against Vermont on Friday.
No. 3 seed New Hampshire and No. 6 Vermont square off in the second tournament quarterfinal at 2 p.m. at the University of Albany.
The entire women's tournament is being played at Albany from Friday to Monday.
The league men's tournament will have its quarterfinals and semifinals at Albany on Saturday and Sunday. The men's championship game is at the home of the highest seed remaining on Saturday, March 15.
The UNH women ended up as the No. 3 seed after losing its season finale at home to Maine, 66-62 on Saturday.
The Wildcats beat Vermont twice during the regular season. UNH won at home, 60-45, at home on Jan. 20 and then won in Burlington, 71-50, on Feb. 19.
UNH takes an 18-11 overall record and 12-4 mark in America East into the tournament. Vermont is 7-22 and 4-12.
The winner of the UNH-Vermont game advances to a Sunday semifinal to play the winner of a game between No. 2 seed Stony Brook and No. 7 UMBC.

The UNH men's team closes out the regular season with a game at Maine on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats are tied for seventh place in America East and need a win to stay out of the eighth spot for the tournament. The No. 8 team will draw regular season champion Vermont.
UNH is 6-22 overall and 4-11 in the league.
Maine is 5-22 and 3-12. The Black Bears beat UNH, 68-60, in Durham on Jan. 29 and thus own the first tiebreak over the Wildcats if the teams end up with identical league records.

Senior forward Kevin Goumas had an assist in Friday night's 4-2 hockey loss at Merrimack College to extend his point scoring to eight games.
Goumas had 13 had 13 goals and 28 assists for 41 points going into Saturday night's rematch at Merrimack.
He continues to climb UNH's career scoring ladder. He has 38 goals and 97 assists for 135 career points in 140 games.
UNH coach Dick Umile shuffled his forward lines for Saturday's game and had senior Nick Sorkin rejoining Goumas and junior Matt Willows on the top line. Junior Grayson Downing centered the second line for senior Dalton Speelman and freshman Tyler Kelleher.
