LONDONDERRY — A counterterrorism expert from Israel will reach out to seasoned martial arts experts — as well as citizens searching for peace of mind — during his visit to Londonderry this week.
Though retired now, Avi Nardia spent many years working in his Israel’s special forces.
These days Nardia, who arrived in Londonderry Sunday morning, travels the nation teaching his self-defense tactics to both police and military units along with civilians.
He said his focus evolved after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, when he felt a calling to work with regular civilians on what he likes to call “Practical Martial Arts,” which incorporates aspects of karate, judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu to empower individuals to protect themselves and their families.
Nardia plans to teach a variety of workshops and classes this week, including training for veteran martial artists at Koryukan Martial Arts, located at 15 Londonderry Road, Unit 8.
A free public demonstration and workshop will take place at the studio on Thursday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. No registration is required, but all participants must be at least 18 years old.
For more information, call Koryukan at 247-8546.
