Doherty wins youth 10-kilometer biathlon

Conway’s Sean Doherty returned home from the Winter Olympics to find gold in Maine.

The Kennett High senior, in 28:51.8, won the youth men’s 10-kilometer pursuit at the IBU Biathlon Youth/Junior World Championships at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle on Sunday. On Friday, Doherty won the 7.5-kilometer sprint.

Last year, Doherty won two gold medals and one silver in the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria.

In the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Doherty was the second-fastest American in the biathlon relay. The youngest athlete ever selected for a U.S. Olympic Biathlon Team at age 18, Doherty competed as a member of the men’s 4x-7.5-kilometer relay squad.

He had the quartet’s second-best time, 19 minutes 37.3 seconds.
