NH unemployment rate drops below 5 percent

New Hampshire's unemployment rate for January was 4.9 percent, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from 5.2 percent in December, New Hampshire Employment Security said Tuesday.

The January 2013 seasonally adjusted rate was 5.5 percent.

Seasonally adjusted estimates for January placed the number of employed residents at 706,030, an increase of 3,080 from the previous month and an increase of 2,600 from January 2013. The number of unemployed residents decreased by 1,610 over the month to 36,590. This was 4,000 fewer unemployed than in January 2013. From December 2013 to January 2014, the labor force increased by 1,470 to 742,620, a decrease of 1,400 from January 2013.

Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2014 was 6.6 percent, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from December 2013, and a decrease of 1.3 percentage points from January 2013.
