Red Sox blasted by Pirates

Clay Buchholz allowed three hits and a run in his spring debut in Boston’s 8-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Matt Joyce’s RBI single off Buchholz got the Rays started in the first inning. Buchholz walked one and fanned one in his one inning of work.

James Loney clubbed a two-run homer and Sean Rodriguez added a solo homer in the fifth. Hak-Ju Lee continued Tampa Bay’s fifth-inning assault off Brayan Villarreal with a two-run double.

Boston’s Rubby De La Rosa also struggled on the mound, pitching two innings and surrendering five hits and four runs.

Starter Chris Archer went the first two innings for Tampa Bay, allowing one hit. Rays pitching permitted eight hits, two by Alex Hassan.
