Another biathlon medal for Conway’s Doherty

Conway’s Sean Doherty continues to add to his medal total at the IBU Biathlon Youth/Junior World Championships at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle, Maine.

On Tuesday, Doherty won a silver medal in the youth men’s 12.5-kilometer individual race. Doherty finished in 35 minutes, 28.9 seconds, runner-up to Russia’s Yaroslav Kostyukov, who crossed the finish line at 35:22.6.

Doherty, a senior at Kennett High School in Conway, has earned three medals this season, winning gold in the sprint last Friday and pursuit on Sunday in the first two youth men’s races. He now has a total of six medals, three golds and three silvers, since last year.

Last year, Doherty captured three medals at the 2013 IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria. Last year he became the first United States biathlete to win three individual medals at a world championship event. He won a gold in the pursuit and silver in the individual and sprint.

In the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Doherty was the second fastest American in the biathlon relay.

The youngest athlete ever selected for a United States Olympic biathlon team, at age 18, Doherty competed as a member of the men’s 4-by-7.5-kilometer relay squad. He had the second best time on the U.S. squad at 19 minutes, 37.3 seconds.

On Thursday, Doherty will compete in the Relay Competition at 12:30 p.m.
