Jury considers fate of Londonderry man in sex assault trial

BRENTWOOD – A jury began deliberating on Thursday in the trial of a former Londonderry youth football coach accused of touching two girls who slept over his home.

Timothy Longua, 42, is facing charges of aggravated felonious sexual assault for allegedly touching one of the girls, then 11, between May and December 2012. At the time of his arrest, Longua was a youth football coach in Londonderry.

“Some of you may have felt some emotion when you heard about the charges, but what you all agreed to do is take that emotion and put it aside,” defense lawyer Charles Keefe said during closing arguments late Thursday.

Keefe argued that girl repeatedly changed her story about the alleged assault while she recounted the incident to her counselor, child advocacy workers and the police.

“It’s not the same story. It’s not the same allegation,” Keefe said.

Assistant County Attorney Jennifer Haggar argued that the girl had no reason to fabricate any allegations about Longua. She maintained that the girl’s story was believable, and endured three and a half hours of questioning about minute details.

“This is a little girl who liked going over there,” Haggar said. “She liked the defendant.”

The trial is the first of two expected for Longua, who was charged last year with touching two girls at his home between the ages of 11 and 12. The defense elected to have separate trials on the two alleged victims.
