Hanover voters approve school renovations

HANOVER — Voters gave the proposed elementary school renovation project the super-majority it needed on Tuesday to move forward.

During the Hanover School District Annual Meeting on Tuesday voters at the polls said yes to the $5.8 million bond needed to renovate the Bernice A. Ray School, the district’s kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school.

The bond article needed two-thirds of the vote to pass and did with 72 percent of the vote, said Ray School Principal Matt Laramie.

“Obviously we’re elated, but really the community really responded in such a positive way,” Laramie said.

The project includes updating the school’s infrastructural systems as well as building an addition so the school can remove a portable classroom it has used for the past 20 years. The addition will also enable the school to move from a part-time, multiple day kindergarten to a full-time kindergarten program, Laramie said, which residents are very supportive of.

The building infrastructures to be upgraded include the roof, insulation, windows and the hearing and ventilation system.

It has been 20 years since the building has had any renovations, Laramie said, and there was a community sentiment that since the new middle school was built about eight years ago and the high school had its own renovation project since then, it was time to address the needs of the elementary school building.

The timing was also right since another school district bond is ending, he said. The new 20-year bond will not have any payments due till 2015-16. The first payment would bring a 17-cent increase to the school tax rate over the current bond payment. Each year after that, the bond payment would decrease till the payments are completed.
