House: Only lottery winners can OK release of their names

CONCORD — Lottery winners would have the sole authority to have their names released to the public under legislation passed by the House on Thursday.
Current law allows that the state lottery commission may release the name of lottery winners upon a written request by any member of the public, including the media.
Under House Bill 1244, only the winner can authorize the release of his or her name.
The House Executive Departments and Administration committee had voted 13-5 that the bill be killed and that the current law continue unchanged.
But after debating the need for privacy versus the need for transparency regarding public money, the House overturned the committee’s recommendation on a vote of 150-149.
It then voted 172-130 to pass the bill to the state Senate.
