College Hockey: Dartmouth drops tournament opener

The Dartmouth College men’s hockey team found itself down early against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and couldn’t recover in a 4-1 ECAC tournament loss Friday night.

Dartmouth now trails the ECAC first-round series 1-0 and will try to recover in Game 2 tonight at RPI in Troy, N.Y.

A third and deciding game, if necessary, will be played Sunday night.

Seventh-seeded RPI (15-14-6) jumped out to an early lead as Ryan Haggerty scored twice in the first period. Haggerty made it 1-0 at 4:39 of the period, scoring 14 seconds into an RPI power play.

Haggerty sent a back-hander past Dartmouth goaltender Charles Grant at 9:59 of the first period to make it 2-0.

Tenth-seeded Dartmouth (8-18-4) found itself down 3-0 at 2:09 of the second period when Jacob Laliberte scored on a goal that was reviewed and ultimately allowed.

Dartmouth cut into RPI’s lead at 8:53 of the second period when Jesse Beamish scored a power-play goal to make it 3-1.

RPI put things out of reach just 1:06 into the third period when Zach Schroeder scored to make it 4-1.

Grant, a sophomore, made 33 saves in goal for Dartmouth.

RPI goaltender Scott Diebold made 29 saves in the win.

Dartmouth has rallied from a 1-0 series deficit four times in program history, including last season against Harvard.
