Great Bay Community College 'boot camp' trains students in precision manufacturing
PORTSMOUTH — The second class in Great Bay Community College's accelerated eight-week Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Production "boot camp" is already underway at SIG Sauer's firearms manufacturing facility at Pease International Tradeport.
"The program is not specific to Sig Sauer; we're training CNC for the Seacoast," Sean Hoeing, training manager with Great Bay, said.
"We have people in the class who have never worked in manufacturing," he said,
Hoeing said CNC equipment has a tolerance of up to 1/100th of an inch.
"It's really for precision manufacturing," he said.
Hoeing said the class has nine students who range in age from 19 to mid-50s. Half are SIG Sauer employees who wish to improve their prospects in the field.
Freedom Chandavong, 23, of Newmarket, began working at SIG as a packager two years ago. He hopes to use the class to jump-start his career in composite component production. SIG Sauer is covering the cost of his tuition, according to a news release issued by the college.
"In today's precision manufacturing, 'good enough' doesn't count," Chandavong said, adding the boot camp bolstered his confidence and determination.
"SIG has made a commitment to me, and I'm going to return that commitment," he said.
Using simulators, which provide a safe environment, students can hone their skills before moving on to actual production equipment, according to the news release.
Hoeing said the school hopes to have up to a dozen students in future classes; the next begins April 7. The enrollment period ends March 21.
"Once you're admitted, you can enroll in any course," Hoeing said, noting the plan is to run five classes in 2014.The CNC Production Boot Camp — like the Advanced Composites Manufacturing class offered by Great Bay at its facility in Rochester — are both part of New Hampshire's Advanced Manufacturing Partnerships in Education (AMPed) program.
