Special to the Union Leader

PLYMOUTH— The fourth-seeded Sunapee boys' basketball team stunned No. 1 Derryfield of Manchester 68-61 on Monday night in the semifinals of the NHIAA Division IV boys' tournament at Plymouth State University.

The Lakers had to survive a furious fourth-quarter Cougar rally to win it. Down 42-21 midway through the third quarter, Derryfield cut the Sunapee lead to 64-61 with 31 seconds remaining. But clutch free throws by Jesse Stiffler kept the Cougars from taking the lead.

Sunapee will face Epping in the Division IV final on Saturday at noon at Plymouth State. Derryfield finished its season with a record of 19-2.

Matt Tenney led the Lakers 16 points, including four three-pointers. Alex Giodassis had 13. Stiffler and Issaiah Chappell each had 12.

For Derryfield, Bennett Doherty had 20 points. Roger Larivee had 17.

Epping 67, Littleton 56

No. 3 Epping blew open a close game in the second half to defeat Littleton in a Division IV semifinal at Plymouth State University Monday.

The Blue Devils' last trip to the state finals was 1992, when they won the Class S crown.

The Blue Devils were led by Jimmy Stanley's 20 points and 14 rebounds. Stanley hit nine of 16 shots from the field, including two of six from three-point range. Colby Wilson added 14 points.

The Crusaders were led by Owen Stone and Logan Briggs with 10 points each. Brett Hagan and Danny Brammer each had 9.

"We hadn't played Littleton this year but I scouted them five times," said Epping coach Sean Young. "I thought we could win the matchup inside with our big man Stanley."

Epping led by as many as 19 points before the Crusaders rallied in the last two minutes to cut the lead nine, but could get no closer. "Everyone stepped up and had a huge game," said Young. "Especially our sophomores, Mick Padgett, Colby Wilson and Dylan Derosiers. They played like seniors today."
