Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce opposes casino bill

MANCHESTER — The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted Monday to oppose a bill that would authorize a casino in southeastern New Hampshire.

At a special board meeting at the chamber’s 54 Hanover St. headquarters, the measure passed with a two-thirds majority vote, the requirement for the organization’s policy positions.

The vote came after months of discussion and several presentations organized by the chamber’s government affairs committee.

Michael C. Whitney, the chamber’s interim president and CEO, said the organization’s primary concern is how the region would be affected by the potential loss of discretionary income, money that would otherwise be spent in the Manchester area.
“The chamber’s first and foremost commitment is in representing the interests of our more than 900 members — small and large businesses that are committed to, and have invested in, the communities of greater Manchester,” Whitney said in a prepared statement.
The House is expected to vote on HB 1633 on Thursday.
