Saving Stevens High School stage in Claremont could cost $100,000By MEGHAN PIERCE

CLAREMONT — A plan to save the Stevens High School stage is expected to cost up to $100,000, however, the unexpected cost would be covered in the project’s contingency fund, David Putnam, Chairman of the Renovation Committee, said Monday.
“We are estimating that it won’t exceed $100,000,” Putnam said. “We have a contingency fund so the money will come from that fund.”
There previously was no budget to renovate the stage as part of the renovation of Stevens High School. Original plans for the renovation included razing the old wooden stage and replacing it with a raised platform only a few inches high.
Students and faculty, though, opposed that plan and said they would prefer to save the traditional stage and that it has historic value.
Several meetings with the construction company and architect were held to finalize the plans. Stevens High School staff and alumni representatives attended the meetings, Putnam said, reaching “consensus and agreement that is good for everyone.”
Work on the stage would take place during summer vacation, but the plan is still waiting on approval from the state and local building and fire inspectors, he said.
“It’s work that has to be done when there is no school,” he said.
The cost of the project is contingent on the reuse of a handicap accessible lift the school already owns.
Putnam said he believes the cost of purchasing a new lift would be around $30,000.
The first phase of the $12.5 million renovation project has already been completed. This phase focused on outdoor site work, including a bus drop-off lane and renovated parking lot.
The second phase that is part of a $4 million project to upgrade all energy systems in the district to wood pellet boiler systems began in January.
