Longtime Goffstown resident remembered for his service

GOFFSTOWN — Longtime resident Lawrence A. Emerton Sr. will be remembered as a caring person who was always ready to lend a helping hand for his community and the state.

Emerton, 85, died March 9 after a brief illness.

.
“He was very active in politics and knew what to say and when to say it,” said Mac Morgrage, who served with Emerton on the Historical Society’s Executive Board. “He was a very caring person who didn’t let anything go by him that deserved his interest.”
..
Morgrage had known Emerton for about 50 years and he was also a friend of Morgrage’s father before him.

“He was always caring toward others and always ready to laugh at whatever tickled him,” said Morgrage.
..
Bill Peabody, a fellow member of the Goffstown Lions Club, remembers Emerton’s devotion to the local Lions and Lions Club International.

“He held many high positions in the Lions Club and he did a lot to help his community,” said Peabody. “I got to know Larry when I joined the Lions Club about 45 years ago, a long, long time. The Lions Club is very service-oriented organization and he was director of Lions International in the state, which is huge in responsibility and very prestigious.”

Peabody said he and Emerton were also fellow members on the Lions’ Ball Field Committee, and his friend was always active in programs that benefited others.
..
“He kept an eye on the ball field and was involved with contractors from different organizations to help set up the field so the youth and high school could use it. He would go and take care of the painting and grounds-keeping — anything that needed to be done, he would do it.”
..
State Rep. John Burt also remembers Emerton, who served in the Legislature for about 24 years. Burt helped Emerton introduce a Municipal and County Committee bill in 2011.

“His main goal was to help people,” said Burt. “He was always very cordial, and when I was a freshman he would always encourage me to help others.”
..
Burt said when he was running for his first term, he knocked on about 1,000 doors to win and was fascinated by the senior representative’s success.

“I came in third and Larry was number one. I asked him how he does it, and he said a lot of it is because of his wife. He said, ‘I haven’t put up a sign in years and I keep winning’” Burt said.
