Whitefield municipal building passes, new CTE center fails

WHITEFIELD &#-; Whitefield will be building a new municipal services building after voters approved the project by a comfortable margin, 105 to 34. Two-thirds approval was needed. The new building will be located on Route 16 next to the fire station and will house town offices, the police department, fire/rescue and recreation department, including a multipurpose room on the lower level. Construction is expected to begin this summer and be completed in about a year.Voters approved a request for $95,000 to conduct a townwide revaluation, with the money to come from the Revaluation Capital Reserve Fund.Another article asking the town to give permission to the Whitefield High School alumni to build a multi-purpose building at 28 King Square to provide public bathrooms was tabled. More information was needed. An article asking the town to express its opposition to the transport of tar sands oil through New Hampshire was approved. An addition to the White Mountain Regional High School that would have provided more space for the Career Technical Education (CTE) programs, plus some new ones, failed. The vote was 925 in favor and 1,035 against. This is the second time the school district has tried to get a new CTE addition approved. Last year it garnered 56 percent approval, just four points short of the majority required. The proposal included about 70,000 square feet of new space for CTE programs with an additional 2,000 square feet for a biomass plant that school officials predicted would have saved about $61,000 a year in heating costs.
