Rochester firm is ready to add jobs

ROCHESTER — The grand opening ceremonies for a new 275,000-square-foot facility — a joint effort of Safran Aerospace Composites (SAC) and Albany Engineered Composites (AEC) — are scheduled for March 31.

The new plant, which will produce advanced composite parts for aircraft engines, is currently “in the operational/testing phase now,” according to Michelle Lyle, director of marketing and communications for Safran USA.

Eventually, the two companies will expand the workforce to about 500 employees as production gradually increases at the facility.

“We currently have over 110 local employees, including 80 people employed at the SAC operation, with 41 for Albany Engineered Composites. We will continue to expand and expect to grow to be nearly 500 employees combined for the two companies by 2020,” Lyle said

The 500 new employees are on top of the existing workforce at the two companies, according to Susan Siegel, vice president of investor relations and corporate communications for Albany International Corp.

Lyle said they are “hiring engineers, technicians, management, quality control and administration jobs.”

She said there is more information about current — and future employment opportunities online at www.safran-na.com and www.albint.com/aec.

“Our goal is to hire this workforce from the local population,” Lyle said.

She said the two companies have been collaborating with Great Bay Community College (GBCC), which is based in Portsmouth, to create an advanced composites manufacturing course in Rochester.

In January, 16 students graduated from the six-month course, which was designed by the college, SAC and AEC “to meet the needs of area manufacturers,” according to Lyle.

Lyle said Safran hired half of the class members following their graduation. A second session is underway.jquinn@newstote.com
