Deadline to renew health plans for Granite Staters extended

CONCORD — New Hampshire insurers will be allowed to renew health plans that do not meet the 2014 standards of the Affordable Care Act through Oct. 2, 2016, but individual consumers need to be aware that federal financial assistance is only available for those buying coverage through the federal healthcare.gov website.

The previous deadline for renewal of the non-conforming policies was Oct. 1, but Insurance Commissioner Roger Sevigny said New Hampshire is matching the deadline extension announced by the federal Department of Health and Human Services March 5.

The New Hampshire Insurance Department Thursday told insurers that it will follow the federal approach.

"New Hampshire will allow health insurers, if they choose, to renew coverage for consumers and small businesses who would like to keep their current plans," said Sevigny. "We will monitor the effects of this transitional measure, as we still have concerns about the potential long-term impact on health insurance markets."
