Boston starter Jake Peavy (44) throws against the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium. (Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports)

Peavy solid in Florida start

Jake Peavy accomplished on Thursday what the Boston Red Sox hope he'll do during the regular season. He submitted a solid start.

Peavy, who cut his left (non-pitching) hand with a fishing knife several weeks ago, hurled three innings and allowed one run in his Grapefruit League debut against the Minnesota Twins. On 53 pitches, he permitted two hits, walked two and struck out two.

Dustin Pedroia cracked a two-run fifth-inning double in a game won by the Red Sox, 4-3.

Shane Victorino had two hits, including an RBI single, for Boston.

Clay Buchholz will start for the Red Sox on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla.
