O'Neill, O'Brien lift Monarchs

O, what a night for the Monarchs.

Winger Brian O'Neill scored three goals and Zach O'Brien added two goals and two assists as Manchester blitzed the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 7-0, Friday at Verizon Wireless Arena.

With the win, the Monarchs extended their lead over St. John's in the Atlantic Division to 10 points. Manchester, at 88 points (40-16-2-6), has the AHL's best record.

Hunter Bishop had a goal and an assist, Nick Shore scored a goal, and Linden Vey and Jordan Weal each added two assists as Manchester poured 43 shots on Bridegport goalie Kenny Reiter.

O'Neill and O'Brien each scored on power plays in the first period, and again at even strength in the second, to give Manchester a 4-0 lead after two periods.

O'Neill completed the hat trick with a power-play tally 5:02 into the third period. O'Brien assisted on Shore's and Bishop's goals later in the third period to account for the final.

Manchester was 3-for-8 on the power play.

Jean-Francois Berube was solid on the other end, turning away all 23 Bridgeport shots.
