St. Anselm rolls into NCAA regional basketball final
The St. Anselm College men’s basketball team is going to the NCAA East Regional final.
Five players hit double-figure scoring as the Hawks beat Bloomfield, 82-68, in a regional semifinal game on Sunday in New Haven, Conn.
Mike McCathey and Dominic Borelli each scored 16 points and John Nielsen (12, on four 3-pointers), Dino Mallios (11) and Roy Mabrey (11) chipped in as St. Anselm, which led throughout, built a six-point halftime lead and expanded it in the second half. The Hawks shot 45.5 percent from the field, to 33.3 percent for Bloomfield.
St. Anselm will play Southern Connecticut in the regional final on Tuesday at 7 p.m. back at New Haven.
Marvin Williams scored 25 points to lead Bloomfield.
Franklin Pierce loses heartbreaker
Franklin Pierce University dropped a 79-77 decision in the final two seconds to Southern Connecticut State in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Tournament East Regional on Sunday night in New Haven, Conn.
Senior forward Ellis Cooper, playing in his final collegiate game for Franklin Pierce, logged a double-double of 30 points and 16 rebounds.
Bentley women host LIU Post
The Bentley University women (31-0), the top-ranked women’s team in Division II, will host LIU Post in the NCAA East Region final tonight at 7 p.m. in Waltham, Mass. It will be the final home game for Bentley seniors, including Manchester’s Christiana Bakolas, the team’s point guard.
Bakolas finished with seven points and a team-high five assists in Bentley’s 79-63 victory over Stonehill in Saturday’s first-round contest.
