Greater Derry-Londonderry Chamber scholarship honors student who died in crash

DERRY — The Greater Derry-Londonderry Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for a scholarship renamed in honor of a Pinkerton Academy student who died following a New Year’s Eve crash.

The 2014 Kyle B. Ross Memorial Scholarship was recently established following a vote of the chamber’s board of directors. Ross is the son of Bernie Ross, a chamber member, director and business leader, said Stacey Bruzzese, the chamber’s executive director.

“Kyle Ross was a very dedicated student and employee who often gave back to his community,” Bruzzese said. “The renaming of the scholarship seems only fitting.”

The death of Kyle Ross, 17, provoked an emotional response from students and sent the school community into mourning.

Ross was driving the car that went out of control and slammed into a tree at a high rate of speed at Gulf Road and Hampshire Drive, according to police.

Passenger Johanna Morse, 16, of Derry, is recovering from severe injuries she suffered in the crash. A third Pinkerton student, Thompson Upham-Davis, 16, of Chester suffered injuries that were not life threatening, according to police.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activity and community service to a graduating high school senior, Bruzzese said.

Applicants of the scholarship must be an employee, dependent of an employee, or student whose employer or educational institution is a member in good standing with the Greater Derry-Londonderry Chamber of Commerce.

The $1,000 scholarship is not based on need, and the application deadline is Thursday, April 17, at 3 p.m.

For additional information or a copy of the application, contact the chamber office by email or telephone, 432-8205. The completed application may be mailed to Greater Derry Londonderry Chamber, ATTN: Scholarship Committee, 29 West Broadway, Derry, NH 03038.
