DERRY — Students from across the state were honored Friday night during the New Hampshire PTA Reflections exhibit at Gilbert H. Hood Middle School.
Hundreds of people attended the recognition program in the school's gymnasium, organizers said.
This year's theme was "Believe, Dream, Inspire." Many of the students' winning art works were displayed on the gym's walls. Some 375 entries were on display, and more than 100 awards were given out to winners.
Some of the students said they drew inspiration from nature and their imaginations.
For her artwork, Hampstead kindergartner Mabel Backman was outside when she was creating her drawing. As she was coloring in the sky, she spotted something that caused her to pause for a moment, her mom Kate Brick said.
"She was coloring in the sky and all of a sudden she saw an animal in the sky, so she stopped coloring in the sky," said Brick, who is the Hampstead PTSA Reflections coordinator. The shape of the animal was then incorporated into the artwork, Brick said.
The Reflections program encourages students to explore and be involved in the arts.
Students create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, music composition, literature, photography and visual arts.
Along with the drawings and written pieces, this year there were a number of musical composition entries, said Sally Bertrand, NH PTA Reflections chairman.
All of the first-place entries go on to national judging, and the results will be revealed in May, Bertrand said.
