Keene man steps forward as driver who struck pedestrian in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD — A Keene man has come forward as the possible driver of a vehicle that struck and injured a pedestrian on Route 9 in the early morning hours Tuesday.

"At this point, it appears likely it was his vehicle," Chesterfield Police Chief Lester C. Fairbanks said Tuesday.

Police responded to Route 9 near the Pond Brook Road intersection just before 1 a.m., Fairbanks said.

"We received two pretty quick calls, one saying there was a subject trying to hitchhike, wearing dark clothing around the same time the 911 call came in saying someone had been struck on Route 9," Fairbanks said.

The vehicle had left the scene.

The pedestrian, Adam Colon, 24, of Hinsdale, was taken to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and then taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass.

Fairbanks said Colon is listed in "stable condition and appears to have broken bones in his legs. … We're told there are no life-threatening injuries."

The Keene man came into the Chesterfield police station around 11 a.m. Tuesday after hearing about the pedestrian being struck on the local news, Fairbanks said.

The Keene man was driving to his job in Brattleboro, Vt., at that time.

He told police he saw the car in front of him jerk, and then he felt something he thought was a pothole. He said he was going to stop at the next service station to check his tire, but then his car appeared to be fine so he continued on his way to work.

Fairbanks has not released the driver's name because police are still investigating to confirm it was his vehicle.

Preliminary investigation results indicate Colon would have been difficult to see on the road, Fairbanks said.

"So far the information appears that he was inebriated and dressed in all dark or black clothing. There is an issue of visibility of him on the road way," Fairbanks said.
