Farmington fire claims several cats and dogs

FARMINGTON — While several cats and dogs succumbed to a fire which forced a family out of its home on Labrador Drive Thursday, one dog was found alive in the basement, according to Deputy Fire Chief James Reinert.

Reinert said he couldn’t say whether smoke inhalation led to the death of the three dogs and three cats which were inside the home at 17 Labrador Drive.

Firefighters from Farmington, Milton and Rochester responded to the fire around 3:45 p.m. after a heavy smoke was spotted coming from the rear of the home. At the time, no one was in the house.

While firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the home, Reinert said the house will need to undergo major repairs before the family can return.

Reinert said the fire remains under investigation, but it appears to be accidental.
