Manchester aldermen fast-track downtown parking fee hikes

MANCHESTER — The Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Tuesday voted to reverse course and approve a slate of parking permit and meter fare hikes for the downtown area.

The board had already approved the increases at a previous meeting, but the Committee on Bills on Second Reading (BSR) had determined that the ordinances, as written, would not allow them to consider the meter rate increases and parking permit increases separately.

A majority on the board disagreed, and instead voted to effectively overrule the BSR committee. The proposed fee hikes will next be reviewed by the Committee on Accounts. The ordinances will raise monthly parking permit costs at the Millyard from $45 to $55. Parking at surface lots, would go from $50 to $60, and the monthly fee at the Victory Garage would go from $75 to $85.

Another ordinance would extend the downtown metered parking zone by roughly two blocks to the north, south and east. The standard 75-cents-per-hour charge would apply to the entire area. In addition, the enforcement hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday-Friday, would apply in the entire area.
The plan is projected to generate $504,000 in new revenue for the city.
