Londonderry coach

Lauzon to lead Londonderry

Jimmy Lauzon said he was content with his position as an assistant football coach at St. Anselm College and didn’t envision a return to the high school coaching ranks, but all that changed when he learned that Londonderry High School was looking for a varsity football coach.

When the Londonderry administration decided to not rehire Jon Rich as the school’s football coach following the 2013 season, Lauzon had an immediate interest in the position. He landed the job Tuesday night, when he was approved by the Londonderry school board.

“I was not planning to apply to any other jobs, but this was too good of an opportunity to pass up,” Lauzon said. “They could be a power program in the state. The fan support is tremendous, the numbers (players in the program) are pretty good, the tradition, the band. Not too many things came to mind as far as negatives.”

Lauzon, 25, spent two seasons as the head coach at Manchester West before joining the St. Anselm staff last year. He coached tight ends and running backs at St. Anselm.

West had a 7-13 record in Lauzon’s two seasons as head coach.

“I’d really like to thank the guys at St. Anselm for bringing me in and letting me learn,” Lauzon said. “I wanted to see what coaching in college was all about. I didn’t plan on (leaving) so soon, but only a few teams in the state have what Londonderry has to offer.”

Lauzon is the third head coach in the history of the Londonderry program. Rich and Tom Sawyer are the others.

Lauzon said he will meet with his team soon, and hopes to have a coaching staff in place within the next month. He said he won’t commit to an offense or defense until he knows more about the players in the program.

Londonderry graduated 23 seniors from a team that finished 4-6 last season following a loss to rival Pinkerton Academy of Derry in the Division I South championship game.

“It’s a great job,” Lauzon said. “I’ve heard about how good Londonderry once was. I hope to get the program back there.”
