Challenger calls for recount in Hooksett

HOOKSETT — Amy Boilard said she had a feeling a recount was imminent.

When the school district election results were announced on Tuesday, Boilard's 691 votes captured the third and final three-year seat on the revamped seven-member Hooksett School Board.

She edged out Jack Sweeney, who garnered 684 votes.

"It was a very close race," said Boilard. "Jack was certainly well within his right to request a recount, and I'm glad we have the laws in place to keep the system honest."

Sweeney said several of his supporters contacted him following the election and encouraged him to call for a recount. Though he said he doesn't expect the result to change, Sweeney said he felt the action prudent given the 1 percent differential.

"Unfortunately, since it's such an involved process, it's going to take these folks most of the day Saturday, but seven votes is a very tight margin, so I felt expediency probably was not the way to go," he said. "Those (voting machines) are pretty accurate, but in this case, I'd prefer to be better safe than sorry."

The recount is scheduled to begin Saturday at 9, and results are expected to be announced that afternoon.

"I think the request for the recount has been handled exceptionally well by the school moderator and school district clerk, and we should know what results that yields on Saturday," said Hooksett Superindent Charles Littlefield.

Current Town Council Chairman Jim Sullivan and Mike Berry secured the other two three-year seats, ousting incumbent Trisha Korkosz, with tallies of 1,020, 832 and 554, respectfully.

Others who ran for the three available three-year positions include Jason Hyde, who earned 449 votes, and Becky Berk, who received 263 votes despite requesting to be removed from consideration after she accepted an education position in Manchester the week before the election.

School meeting March 25

The school board's first meeting, which was originally scheduled for March 18, has been delayed due to the recount. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m.

"Elections have consequences, and from the school board perspective, I think a lot of good folks got elected. Whichever way this goes, I'm hoping for more cooperation among school board members," said Sweeney. "Amy and I probably have some different views, but (that) doesn't make her wrong or me wrong. She's a very intelligent person who I'm sure will do well (if the result holds), and I think the most important thing is getting this board working together again moving forward."
