KEENE — A Swanzey teen running from police jumped into the Ashuelot River Tuesday night in an attempt to evade capture, police said.
Drew K. Anderson, 19, was charged with shoplifting, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled drug, marijuana.
Keene police responded to Walmart in the Riverside Plaza at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday after employees reported Anderson fled after he was allegedly caught shoplifting, Lt. Steven Stewart said Thursday.
Anderson allegedly ran behind Walmart and over a footbridge that connects to a Keene State College campus parking lot.
Stewart said he believes Anderson ran back over the bridge and then into the river, were officers arrested him on the Keene State College side.
“At one point he jumps in the river and crosses right into one of our guys who arrested him,” Stewart said.
It was a short chase, Stewart said.
At 8:56 p.m. Anderson was taken by ambulance to Cheshire Medical Center.
He was cold from being in the river, Stewart said.
Anderson was charged and released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail.
He is scheduled to appear in the 8th Circuit Court District Division in Keene April 9 to be arraigned on the charges.
Police have sought a search warrant of Anderson’s backpack, which he left in the river.
