Trouble Nashua fitness club to reopen after abruptly closing

NASHUA — The owner of a fitness club that abruptly closed earlier this week said he has resolved a financial issue that led to the building's power being disconnected and said the club was to reopen Saturday.

Joshua Husson, who has owned IM Modern Fitness at 596 W. Hollis St. for about 18 months, said an unpaid bill led to the disconnection.

"It was financial," he said. "I'm not trying to hide anything. We have a great membership base and I think most of them know what's going on."

The building housing his club has been placed on the market for nearly $2 million. Husson said he rents his space.

When it closed earlier this week, the gym posted a sign on the window that reads, "Closed: power outage. Working to resolve the matter."

Bob Cassidy of Nashua, who just renewed his membership last month, said he was frustrated that no notice was given to members.

"I have personal items inside of a locker that I would like to retrieve. I just paid my dues," said Cassidy, who was one of three members checking to see if the business was reopened on Friday after being closed on Wednesday and Thursday as well.

"We apologize for what happened," Husson said. "It's been unfortunate. We do have power restored and we look forward to providing (members) the services they're paying for."

The Attorney General's Office had an investigator with the state Consumer Protection Bureau at the site on Friday morning.

IM Modern Fitness, formerly the Nashua Athletic Club, has been open for about 35 years, Husson said. The club has racquetball courts, with several leagues participating.

According to an online posting by NAI Norwood Group, the health club building is now for sale, with an asking price of nearly $2 million. The 24,000-square-foot building sits on 4.4 acres, according to the real estate posting, which states the business is not included in property sale.
