Selectman questions repairs to road with only one house

SALEM — During debate over the town's proposed $4.5 million road program before this month's election, Selectman Pat Hargreaves questioned the wisdom of repaving Mahoney Road, a short road with only one home.

Hargreaves, who is chairman of the board of selectmen, briefly revisited the issue at this week's board meeting in regards to an email to the board from a South Shore Road resident who had concerns about the town's snow removal operations on that road.

Selectman Stephen Campbell noted that South Shore Road is not slated for reconstruction until 2016 and asked whether there was anything the town could do differently next winter to make sure the road does not end up in as bad of a condition."I drove over that road (recently) and it was pretty bad when it was dry," said Campbell. "I can see why it might be difficult to get the snow off the road given the size of the ruts and divots."

Even when the road was dry, Campbell said he had difficulty driving over 10 mph.

During the discussion about South Shore Road, Hargreaves noted that Mahoney Road has only one house on it, which is currently vacant, adding that he feels like it is a waste of money to reconstruct the road.

"It's basically the equivalent of a driveway," Campbell said.

Selectman Everett McBride said, however, that the plans are already in place for Mahoney Road.

"I think the plan is in place, and we are committed to it," McBride said, adding that the Mahoney Road reconstruction was part of the road improvement program approved at the ballot box.If the town does get favorable bids on its road improvement program next year, McBride said there is the possibility that work on South Shore Road could be moved up a year.
