NHDOT posts weight limits on state roads

LANCASTER — In an annual rite of spring, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation has posted load limits on sections of state highways, the majority of them in the North Country.

According to the NHDOT, “Warmer weather means sections of roads will be vulnerable to pavement breaking up as the frost leaves the underlying road base. Road postings are determined annually by local NHDOT District Engineers, who carefully review each roadway in their areas before posting a road limit to ensure protection of the roads.”

The NHDOT said the maximum allowable vehicular weight on posted sections is 30,000 pounds or “the cumulative width in inches of all tires contacting the road surface multiplied by 300 pounds, whichever is less.”

With approval of NHDOT engineers, heating fuel delivery trucks and trucks delivering processed milk products are exempt from the seasonal restrictions.

The Town of Freedom has multiple restrictions: on Route 153 to the Conway town line; on Cushing Corner Road to Elm Street; on Elm Street to Village Road; on Old Portland Road to Route 25; and on Village Road to Route 153.

Lyme has restrictions on sections of Dorchester Road; on East Thetford Road to the Vermont state line; and on North Thetford Road to River Road.Parts of Route 118 from Warren to Wentworth are posted, as is Bradley Hill Road from Bath to Benton; Dame Hill Road in Orford; Ellsworth Road in Rumney; North Dorchester Road in Wentworth and Ellsworth Hill Road in Campton to Ellsworth Pond Road.Route 112 in Conway to the Albany line is posted, as are Route 153 in Conway to Tasker Hill Road; Bear Notch Road in Albany to the Bartlett line and Brownfield Road in Easton to the Maine state line.
