Monarchs outscore Springfield

In a battle of first place teams, the Manchester Monarchs scored three times in the second period to defeat the Springfield Falcons, 5-2, Saturday night in Springfield, Mass.

Atlantic Division-leading Manchester advanced its record to 41-17-8 and will host Hershey today at 3 p.m. at Verizon Wireless Arena. The game will feature special green Girl Scouts jerseys for the Monarchs and the team will also celebrate the birthday of mascot Max with a Star Wars theme.

Northeast Division-leading Springfield is now 39-19-6.

After a scoreless first period where Manchester outshot Springfield, 8-2, Hunter Bishop gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead 54 seconds into the second period. Nick Shore and Sean Backman picked up the assists on Bishop's fifth goal of the season.

Denny Urban tied the game for Springfield at 3:36 with a power-play goal. Manchester reclaimed the lead 27 seconds later when Brian O'Neill scored his 20th goal. Jordan Weal assisted and Backman added another helper.

Linden Vey pushed the lead to 3-1 with a goal at 4:54 of the second.

Weal pushed the Monarchs' lead to 4-1 with his 17th goal of the season at the 11:44 mark of the third period, with assists to Vey and O'Neill.

Dana Tyrell scored for Springfield to make it 4-2 with 3:54 remaining to play.

O'Neill made it 5-2 Manchester with a shorthanded goal at the 18:17 mark.
