UNH's Trevor van Riemsdyk goes pro with Blackhawks

University of New Hampshire junior defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk is turning pro.

The Chicago Blackhawks announced on Monday night that they have agreed with van Riemsdyk on a two-year free agent deal that begins at the start of the 2014-15 season. He will forego his final year of collegiate eligibility.

Van Riemsdyk broke his ankle after crashing into the boards at the Whittemore Center in a game against Union on Jan. 18 and did not play the rest of the season.

He had four goals and 19 assists for 23 points in 26 games for the Wildcats this year.

Last year, van Riemsdyk scored eight goals and had 25 assists for 33 points and was named a first-team All American.

Trevor is the younger brother of James van Riemsdyk, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2007 NHL draft and played for UNH for two years before leaving for the Philadelphia Flyers. James now plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs and played for the United States in the Sochi Olympics last month.

The chance that Trevor van Riemsdyk might leave for a free agent deal was out there.

"That's always a possibility with a player of that caliber," said UNH coach Dick Umile when asked on Sunday if he was concerned that van Riemsdyk might not be back. "We'll see how that all plays out."

UNH's season ended with a 4-0 loss to UMass-Lowell in the Hockey East championship game at the TD Bank Garden. UNH finished 22-18-1.
