CONCORD — The N.H. Liquor Commission is teaming up with North American Spirits and Wine Brokerage of New England and Crown Royal to provide U.S. troops abroad with more than 8,000 Crown Royal bags, which troops use to store night-vision goggles.
As part of this year’s campaign, Crown Royal also donated $10,000 in critical funding to MooreMart, which delivers the bags as part of care packages to active duty military members.
NHLC established collection sites at Liquor and Wine Outlet stores so customers could donate the purple, embroidered bags that come with bottles of Crown Royal to MooreMart.
While the military issues hard cases for the goggles, many find them bulky. The Crown Royal bags have been a perfect fit for troops looking to protect the goggles, while also saving on space and weight, according to NHLC Chairman Joseph W. Mollica.
“With 77 New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlets statewide and steady Crown Royal sales, it was clear that we could play a big role in helping MooreMart collect the supplies it needs to support our troops,” he said.
Crown Royal and NHLC began the Crown Royal bag donation program in New Hampshire last year, and following its great success, Crown Royal and its parent company Diageo expanded it into a national campaign.
Consumers at New Hampshire Liquor and Wine Outlets have the option of donating their Crown Royal bags at the time of purchase, or they may drop them off at NH Liquor & Wine Outlets at any time.
Diageo presented MooreMart with a $10,000 check on March 6, in addition to the $10,000 Diageo donated last year to MooreMart.
MooreMart, which will celebrate its 10-year anniversary this summer, sends about 1,000 care packages every 10 weeks. Since 2004, MooreMart has distributed more than 65,000 care packages to troops abroad.
“About four years ago, we received a request from troops for Crown Royal bags,” said Paul Moore, MooreMart’s founder. With the help of the NHLC and Crown Royal, the effort to collect the bags took off. Last year, the campaign helped collected 5,000 bags.
“Right now we have about a 3,000-bag backlog,” Moore said. “We’re so grateful to NHLC and Crown Royal for their support. This has really been a blessing.”
