Pelham reaches deals with design, construction firms for high school renovation

PELHAM — As the $22.5 million high school renovation project moves forward, the district will have the design and construction team in place that helped secure the project’s approval at the ballot box earlier this month.

The school board recently authorized the district to finalize contract negotiations with Trident to be the owner’s representative for the district; Bonnet, Page, and Stone to be the construction management firm; and Tighe and Bond to be the site and civil engineers for the project.

The move keeps the design team for the project in place and provides the best assurance that the project will be kept to the publicized timeline, Superintendent Amanda Lecaroz said.

About $17 million of the $18.8 million in hard costs of the project will go out to open bid at the sub-contractor and vendor level.

The project includes a two-story addition that will increase the total square footage of the high school from 88,000 square feet to 130,000 square feet.

The project will increase the number of classrooms, increase the size of the existing classrooms, update the cafeteria and gym, add a new performing arts space and create additional parking.

The new classroom space means the district will also be able to get rid of portable classrooms.

The project looks to eliminate much of the traffic congestion at the school by creating more parking to the right of the building and changing the location of the bus loop.

Outside, several playing fields will be moved, including the softball field and tennis courts, to make way for the new addition, which will be visible to the public from the main road.

There is a targeted completion date of summer 2016 for the project, with students continuing to attend the school during the renovation work.

The first phase of the project this spring and summer includes site and septic work. The new addition is scheduled to be built during the 2014-15 school year, and the renovations to the existing building are planned for the summer of 2015 and the 2015-16 school year.
