Petco opening a new Hooksett store in May

Petco plans to open a 12,500-square-foot store at the former location of Staples in the Hooksett Commons shopping plaza near Kohl’s and Payless Shoesource. RYAN O’CONNOR

HOOKSETT — For six months, the 20,500-square-foot space that once housed Staples at the Hooksett Commons off Exit 10 has remained empty.

This May, Petco plans to fill the vacancy, opening a new pet megastore just miles from the company’s South Willow Street location in Manchester.

Petco is taking up 12,500 square feet of the space that sits between Kohl’s department store and Payless Shoesource. The remaining 8,000 square feet will be marketed for either retail or restaurant use, according to the Hooksett building department.

There are more than 1,300 Petco stores in the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico, and the company is targeting a grand opening date of May 16 for its Hooksett location.

Megan Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for Petco, said the new store plans to include grooming, dog training and live animals.

In addition, the company is committed to forging a close partnership with local adoption agencies, she said.

“We host quite a few national adoption weekends each year where we have adoption partners on site,” Gonzalez said. “We also host a lot of community events, free seminars and in-store nutrition consultations as well as family-friendly meet-the-critters events where folks come in and learn about which pets might be a right fit for their family.”

Staples closed on Oct. 5, and Petco’s site plan was approved by the planning board later that month. Contractors obtained a sign permit at the beginning of March, and renovations are ongoing to the outer facade and to the interior of the building. Signs stating “Coming Soon” and “We’ll Be Here Soon” have been placed on the exterior.

In addition, Petco is already hiring for the new location and has scheduled job fairs for Wednesday, April 2, from 3 to 5 p.m.; Thursday, April 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, April 5, from noon to 5 p.m. The job fairs will be held at the company’s Manchester location at 1049 S. Willow St.

Those interested in jobs ranging from dog trainers and groomers, to aquatics specialties, to sales associates and cashiers are encouraged to apply online.
